Counting down | Contagem decrescente

I´m sorry I cannot post images of what I´ve been working on. Some are Christmas gifts and I don´t want to spoil the surprise. Other projects haven´t been pubblished yet - and that means I can´t disclose anything.

Well, in a few words, I´ve been so busy that the days until friday (the day we leave for the holidays) will be very, very full and an incredible low amount of posting is expected.

Happy holidays to everyone!

*

Little Chrismas trees | Arvorezitas de Natal

Here are my first Christmas trees of the season (I know, I know I should have a lot of decorations up but having a summery Christmas for the first time in my life has changed my notion of the holidays - I can´t seem to understand that Christmas is in a few days!) and they are destined to be a gift to some friends. I hope they like them (and aren´t reading this!).

And a close-up...

Ornament Swappers!

I´m looking forward to seeing all the ornaments that my parents have been receiving. For some time now they´ve been telling me "a new ornament has arrived!" and I can´t wait to open the evenlopes and see what they look like! Thank you, group 18!

Below, links to group 18 swappers.

Illustration Friday: Little things

This week´s Illustration Friday topic is "little things".

This is my contribution, some little things I collected while jogging this morning.

I just love Spring!

O tópico desta semana do Illustration Friday é "little things".

Lisbon! | Lá vai Lisboa!

I´m happy to report that the New York Times listed Lisbon as second in "the 53 places to go in 2008" article.

I have a huge smile on my face, partially because home is always home and seeing my city being recognised as a must-visit-place gives me a particularly good feeling.

Paris, Rome and London are great, of course, but Lisbon is totally different from everything standard-european. Just go there and tell me what you think!

Enfim, é a minha cidade!

Knitting bug attack | Ataque do bichinho do tricô

I´ve been attacked by the knitting bug. I feel it in my fingers (not in my toes, though) and am resisting the temptation of buying needles and yarn just a couple of weeks before leaving to Portugal (why take extra weight when I can buy everything there?). Let alone that it´s winter there and knitting warms my hands...

Let´s see who wins...

(does anyone have any special hints for an "almost beginner"?)

*

Ornament Swap

I´ve talked about the 2007 Holiday Ornament Swap before (here and here). This post is about the ornament I designed for the swap.

I always try to take the opportunity of "having to" create something to try a new technique. I had been wondering about which technique I should use and that was when I read a post by Amy about paper cutting. In her post, she had a link for Cindy´s blog, a papercut artist. As you can see, her blog is full of beautiful things and packed with very good tips (including a video I can´t link to directly but is very easy to find among her posts).

That was the final push I needed to go for papercutting. And, let me tell you, it is a really engaging technique. There´s so many things one can do with wonderful and sometimes surprising results.

Maybe, since I started from zero, I can invert the adjectives here and say that the results are always surprising and sometimes wonderful!

I learnt some things I´d like to share here while working on the ornaments (and I shall not mention how many times I had to correct drawings that looked nice on sketch but broke as I cut them!).

Well, first and foremost: don´t despair if your first few attempts break or don´t look nice. I guess it´s just that way. Just make sure you understand where it breaks so that you can correct the sketch.

Then, avoid the temptation of details: on my first sketches I had a huge amount of tiny little details that just revealed to be impossible to cut decently. If you want detail, work on larger formats (my ornament fits a postcard-sized envelope, I´ll explain why later).

When cutting curves, resist the temptation of skewing your cutter. Always have your blade in a 90º angle with your paper: cuts are sharper and you need less strength. Results are easier to control as well.

I used gift-wrapping paper, although origami paper is a good option too. It was the only golden paper I found and it proved to work well.

Oh, I almost forgot! Apply about one-third of the strength you initially think you´ll need. I was using so much strength that the blade was getting stuck into the art board under the paper. And, obviously, paper wasn´t being cut that much. It wasn´t effective at all. And it´ll save you a huge blister on your index finger!

(Oh, and by the way: as I mentioned before, my ornaments fit a postcard-sized envelope. I decided to make something flat and easily mailed than something "chunky" that had to be sent in a package. This was mainly because my experience with the post here is that whatever looks different from a normal letter doesn´t get delivered. Even a simple letter with some photos inside got lost somewhere between Portugal and Argentina!)

Well, below are some photos of the ornament. I hope my group will like them!

E já quase me esquecia!

Here it is!

All waiting to be shipped...

And they´re ready to go!

Recommended reading | Leitura recomendada

I most vehemently recommend anyone interested in starting a carreer in illustration (or, basically, a freelance carreer in most fields) reading this very complete article by Nate Williams. It is packed with very useful information and links.

Thanks Nate!

Back to the usual routine | De volta à rotina

Things have been hectic around here, with family and friends visiting. For some reason, it just doesn´t match to have loved ones visiting and concentrating on work. At least not for me! :)

Well, I am now back to work and have a huge to-do list today, so I´m keeping this post short. I am currently working on three different design assignments and can only post about them when they´re finished, so...

This week I´ll also be sending out my ornaments for the Ornament Swap, but I´ll let you know when I do.

Now, got to get back to work!

Vou mergulhar no trabalho!
