Happy Holidays | Boas Festas

I wish you all happy holidays! See you in 2008!

Boas festas a todos, vemo-nos em 2008!

Counting down | Contagem decrescente

I´m sorry I cannot post images of what I´ve been working on. Some are Christmas gifts and I don´t want to spoil the surprise. Other projects haven´t been pubblished yet - and that means I can´t disclose anything.

Well, in a few words, I´ve been so busy that the days until friday (the day we leave for the holidays) will be very, very full and an incredible low amount of posting is expected.

Happy holidays to everyone!

*

Little Chrismas trees | Arvorezitas de Natal

Here are my first Christmas trees of the season (I know, I know I should have a lot of decorations up but having a summery Christmas for the first time in my life has changed my notion of the holidays - I can´t seem to understand that Christmas is in a few days!) and they are destined to be a gift to some friends. I hope they like them (and aren´t reading this!).

*

And a close-up...

Ornament Swappers!

I´m looking forward to seeing all the ornaments that my parents have been receiving. For some time now they´ve been telling me "a new ornament has arrived!" and I can´t wait to open the evenlopes and see what they look like! Thank you, group 18!

Below, links to group 18 swappers.

Illustration Friday: Little things

This week´s Illustration Friday topic is "little things".

This is my contribution, some little things I collected while jogging this morning.

I just love Spring!

O tópico desta semana do Illustration Friday é "little things".

Lisbon! | Lá vai Lisboa!

I´m happy to report that the New York Times listed Lisbon as second in "the 53 places to go in 2008" article.

I have a huge smile on my face, partially because home is always home and seeing my city being recognised as a must-visit-place gives me a particularly good feeling.

Paris, Rome and London are great, of course, but Lisbon is totally different from everything standard-european. Just go there and tell me what you think!

*

Enfim, é a minha cidade!

Knitting bug attack | Ataque do bichinho do tricô

I´ve been attacked by the knitting bug. I feel it in my fingers (not in my toes, though) and am resisting the temptation of buying needles and yarn just a couple of weeks before leaving to Portugal (why take extra weight when I can buy everything there?). Let alone that it´s winter there and knitting warms my hands...

Let´s see who wins...

(does anyone have any special hints for an "almost beginner"?)

*

Ornament Swap

I´ve talked about the 2007 Holiday Ornament Swap before (here and here). This post is about the ornament I designed for the swap.

I always try to take the opportunity of "having to" create something to try a new technique. I had been wondering about which technique I should use and that was when I read a post by Amy about paper cutting. In her post, she had a link for Cindy´s blog, a papercut artist. As you can see, her blog is full of beautiful things and packed with very good tips (including a video I can´t link to directly but is very easy to find among her posts).

That was the final push I needed to go for papercutting. And, let me tell you, it is a really engaging technique. There´s so many things one can do with wonderful and sometimes surprising results.

Maybe, since I started from zero, I can invert the adjectives here and say that the results are always surprising and sometimes wonderful!

I learnt some things I´d like to share here while working on the ornaments (and I shall not mention how many times I had to correct drawings that looked nice on sketch but broke as I cut them!).

Well, first and foremost: don´t despair if your first few attempts break or don´t look nice. I guess it´s just that way. Just make sure you understand where it breaks so that you can correct the sketch.

Then, avoid the temptation of details: on my first sketches I had a huge amount of tiny little details that just revealed to be impossible to cut decently. If you want detail, work on larger formats (my ornament fits a postcard-sized envelope, I´ll explain why later).

When cutting curves, resist the temptation of skewing your cutter. Always have your blade in a 90º angle with your paper: cuts are sharper and you need less strength. Results are easier to control as well.

I used gift-wrapping paper, although origami paper is a good option too. It was the only golden paper I found and it proved to work well.

Oh, I almost forgot! Apply about one-third of the strength you initially think you´ll need. I was using so much strength that the blade was getting stuck into the art board under the paper. And, obviously, paper wasn´t being cut that much. It wasn´t effective at all. And it´ll save you a huge blister on your index finger!

(Oh, and by the way: as I mentioned before, my ornaments fit a postcard-sized envelope. I decided to make something flat and easily mailed than something "chunky" that had to be sent in a package. This was mainly because my experience with the post here is that whatever looks different from a normal letter doesn´t get delivered. Even a simple letter with some photos inside got lost somewhere between Portugal and Argentina!)

Well, below are some photos of the ornament. I hope my group will like them!

E já quase me esquecia!

Here it is!

All waiting to be shipped...

And they´re ready to go!

Recommended reading | Leitura recomendada

I most vehemently recommend anyone interested in starting a carreer in illustration (or, basically, a freelance carreer in most fields) reading this very complete article by Nate Williams. It is packed with very useful information and links.

Thanks Nate!

Back to the usual routine | De volta à rotina

Things have been hectic around here, with family and friends visiting. For some reason, it just doesn´t match to have loved ones visiting and concentrating on work. At least not for me! :)

Well, I am now back to work and have a huge to-do list today, so I´m keeping this post short. I am currently working on three different design assignments and can only post about them when they´re finished, so...

This week I´ll also be sending out my ornaments for the Ornament Swap, but I´ll let you know when I do.

Now, got to get back to work!

*

Vou mergulhar no trabalho!

Tides and waves | Marés

Since I´ve started freelancing I got the feeling that work and commissions come and go as tides: some months you´re totally overwhelmed with work, some months there´s so much spare time you even have time to organize your font library.

This month has been one of those overwhelming months - and my personal projects have been put on hold. My website is just waiting until I finish all those projects with tight deadlines, but (fortunately) work just keeps on coming.

Well, I guess that´s good news! :)

*

Pay it forward

I just joined "pay it forward"! I saw it on Sarah´s blog, which I usually read. I really like the things she does with paper, the cuts, the volumes, the bookbinding... So I was very happy to see that she still had space for me. Pay it forward goes like this:

I will send a handmade gift to the first 3 people who leave a comment (and email address so I can contact you!) on my blog requesting to join this PIF exchange. I don’t know what that gift will be yet and you may not receive it tomorrow or next week, but you will receive it within 365 days, that is my promise! The only thing you have to do in return is pay it forward by making the same promise on your blog.

so, if you´re interested, join in!

*

Eu, como comentei o post "pay it forward" no blog "little paper bird", receberei um presente dela e comprometo-me a fazer o mesmo, no meu blog.

2007 Holiday Ornament Swap´s list

I just received my list of swappers and am so looking forward to it! I´ll be sending out my ornaments to you from Argentina but expecting yours in Lisbon, where I´ll be spending Christmas.

I hope you like whatever I come up with!

*

Sun Jar

Oh, I just loved this Sun Jar! I found it via Camilla´s blog and found the idea so cool. Then again, maybe I should say "warm"! We are now heading towards summer so lack of sunshine shouldn´t be an issue. But these days we´ve had such cold and rainy weather I could use one right now!

*

2007 Holiday Ornament Swap

It´s a bit last minute but make sure you join the 2007 Holiday Ornament Swap. I´ll write more about it later, but now I must go to the second part of my spanish language exam.

*

Thursday 8 November 2007

Spanish exam tomorrow! | Amanhã, o exame de castelhano

At least I´m more fluent in spanish than in "internetese", which gives me a certain feeling of relief. I just wish I don´t let any of those portuguese-speaker´s mistakes happen.

Diving into it now. Working on my website is postponed until next week. :(

*

Chuif. :(

Website

I haven´t posted as often as I´d wish because I´ve been stuck with my website. I´m not the kind of person who knows her way around the webtools that much, so sometimes "internetese" is just too much for me.

Somehow I feel like I´m swimming inside this HUGE bowl full of fruit salad and pieces of code are chunks of fruit. And I swim and swim and hopefully I´ll see the end of it.

*

My first doll ever | O meu primeiro boneco de pano

This is my first fabric doll ever. The good news is that its theme was "monster". It means that if my sewing is less than perfect (a lot less, I may add!) it actually contributes to the character´s mosntruosity. It´s for Penelope´s Illustration´s Monster Mash.

*

É para o concurso Penelope´s Illustration´s Monster Mash.

Rubberstamp II | Carimbo II

Another rubber stamp carved to be included in the treasure box I´m preparing for my niece. These are her initials.

Here´s something I forgot (and had to carve it again): always carve letters inverted. It´s so obvious - and still I forgot it. :)

*

Back to kindergarten days | De volta à minha Quinta Florida

There are some images I remember from kindergarten. Some of them remain with me as if they happened just yesterday... So this is something I remember doing there. It´s a very easy technique and probably the precursor to the airbrush or today´s ink spray: you put a little bit of ink on a spoon and then you spray it to the paper with the help of a tooth brush.

I decided to use some simple shapes: a tree branch and a bird. I had to cut masks twice because the first round ended up to be too thin to get a good image with those tiny ink blotches. I learnt by doing it that it is recommended to have a minimum amount of ink on the spoon, so that you don´t get big, splashy blotches.

It´s fun to use different colors on a shape: "spray" your first color, allow it to dry, and then apply your second color.

What do you think of it? Let me know if you have any fun kindergarten techniques to share. My niece will be visiting soon and I have to keep her busy! (and improve my collection of her drawings, of course!)

*

Pecha Kucha Night - something like a report

Las Tuesday was Pecha Kucha Night here in Buenos Aires. It was in Ciudad Cultural Konex, a venue I had never been to before but is very appropriate to events like this one. Inside there´s a big patio with a bar and a shop. There were some exhibitions by different artists, some of then were also speakers. I was a bit scared that it would be a succession of designers promoting their work but it really wasn´t that way.

Well, I´m not the best person for remembering names, so for those of you who may want to know more about the artists, I´ll redirect you to the Pecha Kucha website, where more accurate info is available.

What follows is a small review of the presenters that somehow impacted me. Any lack of accuracy is due to my unjournalistic eyes and purposes.

The first presentation that really called my attention was by José Maria Muscari. It was about loneliness and love. His images captured an evening in Buenos Aires, a well-known city for its "movida", where people seemed to be at the loneliest ever, even if they had company. I really liked that someone actually took the time to be curious enough to work about being lonenly. He certainly isn´t the first one in art, nor the last one, for that matter, but it did appeal to me in a way other works haven´t. Maybe I just identified myself with it at this speciic point in time, but then again isn´t it always like this? Doesn´t someone enjoy something and sometime later realise it wasn´t exactly that good and vice-versa? Well, I did like it. I liked the images and I liked his presentation, which, on a second moment got connected with love.

Lateral Media Lab were also there. Their presentation was less interesting than the content itself. In that line of thought, they had a really fun device on the patio that everyone could try: with a little pointing devide, one could digitally paint grafitti on the wall. It even had the effect of the excess ink running down! Their work had a really interesting concept underneath, mixing technology, media and communication to have users interact with digital instruments.

One presentation that I really enjoyed was the one by Ants.tv. They showed some of their work in motions graphics for TV. They do the kind of animations that appear before ads on a given channel. I liked it so much, I admired them so much. I wonder how they do it. I really like the fact that their wonderful illustrations were moving. It´s a totally new dimension but they certainly deal with it well. I just wondered how they do it, it´s amazing. (Or so I think.)

There was a serial entrepreneur called Santiano Bilinkis. His stories were fun and inspiring, though I don´t have the entrepreneurship blood running in my veins.

Don´t be fooled by the lack of information Jimena Nahon´s website displays. I visited it and was a bit disappointed. So then, when I heard her presentation, I had low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised. She presented her work, a catalog of things. So she developed a catalog of things, basically clothing, shoes and beauty care. They make their own photographic productions for the products displayed, which adds up to the level of interest. The best part is that it ends up working like a source book for me, when I need ideas or images to start working on some idea. And I really liked the concept of making a catalog of everything.

There was Fernanda Laguna, who presented in the category "woman". I wonder why she was there, but her presentation turned out to be fun. I thought that suddenly 6´40´´ would be way too long and probably tedious, but although she didn´t present anything special, she made us all laugh. It was a good opportunity to learn some slang.

I just couldn´t finish this pseudo-report without mentioning Diego Golombek, a biologist and scientist. His presentation was fun and informing, full of great and intelligent jokes and references. I actually learnt something from it: he studies the mechanisms of time inside the living being (I hope I´m not saying anything wrong here, so if I am, Diego please forgive me). He mentioned that somehow people living in the poles did have a sense of night and day, even having 6 months of sunshine and 6 months of night. Somehow, the sense of time is embedded in our brains and our bodies. That´s what he talked about. This was one of the presenttations I wish were longer.

There´s still no date for Pecha Kucha Night in Buenos Aires vol.8, but I´ll definitely return.

Pecha Kucha Night - Buenos Aires

In the words of its creator,

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

Tonight it´s Pecha Kucha Night here in Buenos Aires. It´s my first PKN ever, so I´ll write about my impressions soon.

*

Rubberstamp | Carimbo

I read about this technique in a post in superziper and there was a link to this flickr image and knew that I had to try it sooner or later. I then remembered a set of rubberstamps one of my sisters had when she was little and how much fun it seemed to be to stamp stamp stamp. My niece is coming in November, so this little toy is already waiting for her.

I didn´t have the appropriate ink, so had to resort to an improvised technique: I dove a toothbrush into a little bottle of Ecoline and used it to ink the rubber. It´s not the same, but it is fun and looks ok. :)

*

Illustration Friday

This is my first collaboration with Illustration Friday. This week´s topic is "Open". There´s a contest going on, so make sure you check all other entries. 25 entries will be chosen to be in a gallery exhibition. I´m so curious to see the other entries... and , of course, to see if someone votes my illustration!

IF rocks!

Viva o Illustration Friday!

About hyperlinks on blogposts

This is a post (actually, two) I wrote in my personal blog, in portuguese. I´ll translate and adapt them because I really feel this will become an important topic on legibility.

If you wish to read them in portuguese, here they are: "Chiii! Já chega!" and "Não sei se ficou bem claro".

When I was a kid, I used to enjoy reading encyclopedias and just browsing through articles. I would jump from one article into another, following the flow of the referral hand and the terms highlighted in bold.

With today´s technology these referrals between articles are made with hyperlinks and new articles are only a click away. This is great, but up to a certain point. And then it becomes annoying.

In my blog-reader routine I´ve noticed a certain growing tendency: authors include more and more hyperlinks in their posts. Not exactly as an extra, but making it the main message. Such as:

"I´m working on this sketch (link); I got my inspiration reading this (link) and this (link). I bought this medium (link) at my usual supplies shop (link). After my last attempt (link) I decided to go practice some yoga (link) and medidate on my next trip (link)."

This huge amount of non self-explanatory links adds up to a huge distraction in my reading, totally interrupting the flow of the story being told. I have no idea of what the author means about "this", so I´ll just have to click the hyperlink provided to have a clue and understand the context better.

The problem is that whenever I navigate away from the original article I was reading I am distracted from the content - which probably wasn´t the intention in the first place, very much the opposite. So, for now, I will try to keep my hyperlinks in my posts to a minimum and as much as sel-explanatory as possible. Like some paragraphs above: I´ll explain what the link is and the reader clicks it only if she wants. For now, this is my optimal solution, but I´m always receptive to (your) better suggestions.

*

KaosPilots

I first heard of the KaosPilots from a friend of mine from Sweden. She went to this very different entrepreneurial-meets-management-meets-leadership-meets-innovation school. They´re now opening a new branch in Stockholm, the beautiful nordic city (my northernmost trip ever!). Check out KP´s website and find more info about it. School starts in January so make sure you apply for it by October 15th.

*

These are some shots of the posters designed for this year´s Belém Trancão, um corredor verde para Lisboa. It is organized by GEOTA and consists on a bicycle ride by the Tejo and its aim is to raise awareness so that the city´s developing plan converts this route into a "green corridor".

A poster (two formats), a flyer, a T-shirt (and some other stuff) were designed for this year´s event. Take a look at the pictures below (Photos taken by Pedro, thanks!).

(Workspace) Invaders

The other day these little creatures invaded my artboard while I was researching for a logo for a new school. The logo turned out totally different, but the invasors were sweet and certainly are welcome to occupy my space. Again.

Outra vez.

Wedding season

Late summer is probably the best (and preferred) time for couples to get married in Portugal. This year, I designed my cousins´ invitation and related stationery. The main theme was herbs - we use them often to add flavour to our cooking.

(Thank you Guida for the photos!)

New website

I´m very happy to announce that my new website will be ready soon. In the meantime, you can take a look at the old one here.

*

Entretanto, o antigo continua aqui.

I am...

...a graphic designer and illustrator. I´ve been trained as a graphic designer and am now working mostly on illustration. It´s always been a sort of a side plate to graphic design, but time comes when you need a dietary change. Let´s say that graphic design is a cool, cool thing to work on and illustration a wonderful way to wander off.

...a portuguese who now lives in Argentina. I write about it here.

...passionate about details, languages, puzzles, sudoku and books.

...a novice but keen knitter. You can see me on ravelry here.

...crazy about my niece, boyfriend and family (not necessarily in this order).

You can find more of me on my website, on my flickr page or on my personal blog (in portuguese).

Thanks for stopping by!

Podem-me encontrar no ralvelry aqui.

Work in progress? Now what is this?

This is a blog, something like a work diary, where I intend to post something about what I´m working on currently, or better still, whatever I´ve finished. Or whatever wasn´t good enough to be on a final work but nice enough not to be left to oblivion. So. There.

This is a bilingual blog because although my first language is portuguese, a wonderful and rich language if I may add, I understand that writing in english allows many other people to access blog contents. I hope that this way I can reach a broader audience, without missing the pleasure of writing in the one language I am comfortable with.
