I´ve been working on a paper cut for an editorial illustration. I photographed each step so soon we´ll have a new "making of" series on my flickr.

Have a good weekend!

Tuesday came with my painting class. The challenge was to make a composition using only one colour (with as many tones as we may care to have).

As usual, I had fun.

More photos.

Drawing | Desenhos

Paulo is painting

We had a ridiculously wet weekend so we stayed in. Paulo painted a piece he had in mind for a long time. I drew him.

O fim-de-semana chuvoso convidou a estar em casa. Enquanto o Paulo pintou, eu desenhei-o.

It´s summer and I love it

it´s summer and I love it

Summer has always meant "beach" and "seaside" to me. Here in Buenos Aires, it means "none of the above". It means hot weather, flowers, picnics in the park. Different, but good.

My dear owls are done | Mochinhos acabados

...I´m actually wearing the pure wool sweater!

I´m breaking my "no-internet-during-weekends-rule" for a good reason: I finished my owls sweater (awesome free pattern here). My love for this sweater is so huge that I´m actually slightly looking forward to sweater season, which will start sometime late April here in Buenos Aires.

This pattern is so well written that it is a pleasure to knit it. I´m not an experienced knitter (nor a fast one, for that matter), but this pattern is very accessible and easy to understand. I followed a chart, for the first time in my life, and wasn´t too intimidated by it. Seeing the owls appearing, row by row, made me want to knit faster. But then, seeing that I was about to finish it, made me want to knit slower. Anyway, I feel like when I finish a great book: bookless. Only this time I´m sweaterless. But happy.

"And the pursuit of happiness", by Maira Kalman

If you haven´t read it yet, do read Maira Kalman´s column on the New York Times, appearing the last friday of every month, named "And the pursuit of happiness". The theme is the american democracy, and january´s issue is now online here.

With her beautiful paitings, Ms. Kalman´s shows us other perspectives on President Obama Inauguration Day, smaller perspectives, maybe, but probably those that weren´t broadcasted on mainstream media. The simplicity of her images combined with her use of handwritten type result in a clear, to the point, but very, very poetic contribution to depicting the feelings of not only americans but so many of us throughout the world.

More Maira Kalman.

Painting

Painting classes in the summer are a bit different than the regular ones throughout the year. Not only the students are different - mostly people who want to start painting but haven´t had training - but also there´s no model, the basic anchor to all the work developed during the other months.

It doesn´t mean that they are uninteresting, not at all. We´ve been making different exercises that probably have no opportunity to arise during the rest of the year, and it actually feels good to go back to the basics and learn from the experience.

Yesterday the challenge was to make a composition with the contrasts made by primary colours, mixed on the palette.

Can you tell that I had fun putting this together? I´m happy with the result, I wonder how I can further use it... any suggestions?

More pictures of my paintings.

"Buenos Aires
Art Déco y Racionalismo"

de Mimi Böhm, Fabio Grementieri (texts | textos), Xavier Verstraeten (photography | fotografia)

This is a book I received as a gift on my birthday and proved not only to be a seemingly endless source of inspiration but also a tool to reinforce my (already strong) love for Buenos Aires.

While I was studying I did this research project on modernism both in Portugal and its influences in Macau, where I lived during my teenage years. This project was one of the milestones on my training as a graphic designer, basically because of the methodology used on this kind of architecture (a rational one, as this book´s title says) and the visual translation it has in its shape.

This book documents this period here in Buenos Aires and shows images of varied buildings, of pottery, ads, clothes and many, many other things.

And it feels great to recognize those buildings and actually strengthening this belonging-kind-of-relationship that I now have to my host city.

*

How cool can knitting be?

For those who believe that knitting is for grandmas only, here´s a cool knitted light object. (found via Camilla Engman)

Painting, again | A pintar, outra vez

I must admit: I don´t paint at home. I don´t have enough "room", meaning both physical space and mental space. I think I ought to paint at home, but I just don´t. There´s all the work to be done, the to do list to be tackled, all other projects on hold and painting... well, that´s for those two hours a week, in a specific space, with a specific group of people who go there to do the same. I like it that way.

*

2009.02.10These were painted yesterday...

2009.02.03_02This was the week before. I´m glad to be back.

Yesterday | Ontem

It´s great to be a birthday girl in the summer.

No ano passado, o meu primeiro aniversário no Verão, choveu. Estou feliz!

Lisbon love

Being back to Buenos Aires I´m now able to go through the photos taken while away at home, in Lisbon. I know it sounds funny to say "away at home", but I guess that Lisbon will always be my home, even if I live elsewhere. So pardon me and my love for my city, specially if I mention it a bit too much in the next few days.

This is a view of the aqueduct of Lisbon. This part of it is about 1km long, but it is stretches for more than 50km, from the outskirts of the city into downtown. It isn´t in use right now and it will be open to the public as of March 2009, as far as I know.

Even in rainy days, Lisbon is a beautiful city, isn´t it?

Some more knitting | E ainda o tricot

It´s not that I haven´t been working - I have. It´s just those jobs that I have no images to show, either because it´s too early or because printed pieces aren´t back from the printer.

So, a bit more of knitting. The Owls Sweater is almost knitting itself. I´m having so much fun and learning so much while knitting it that it doesn´t even bother me that the weather is so hot and I´m forming a sweater-shaped-sheep on my lap. I don´t mind, it´s just fun.

See how this was on friday?
Owls last friday

This is how it looks today:
Owls today
And I could hardly be described as a fast knitter. I´m not. I just did it for quite a long time over the weekend.

by the pool - oh, how I love you, dear summer
By the pool, let me add. (which is a very interesting addition if you consider this a "work blog". But hey, it´s definitely taking my time!)
